Vehicle Classification Overview
All Philippine expressways classify vehicles into three classes for toll fee purposes. Class 1 is the cheapest and covers most private vehicles. Class 2 covers medium-sized commercial vehicles. Class 3 covers the largest vehicles. The classification is based on the number of axles and vehicle size, as regulated by the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB).
Class 1 Vehicles
Class 1 covers most private vehicles and smaller commercial vehicles with 2 axles:
| Cars/Sedans | All car types: sedan, hatchback, coupe, convertible |
| SUVs | Sport utility vehicles: Fortuner, Montero, CRV, RAV4, etc. |
| Pickup Trucks | Light pickup trucks: Hilux, Ranger, Navara, Strada |
| Vans | Passenger vans: Hi-Ace, Urvan, Staria, Carnival |
| Motorcycles | Motorcycles with RFID (allowed on select expressways only) |
| Small Trucks | Light commercial vehicles and small delivery trucks (2 axles) |
Class 2 Vehicles
Class 2 covers medium commercial vehicles, typically with 3 axles:
| Buses | Provincial buses, tourist buses, shuttle buses |
| Medium Trucks | 6-wheel trucks, wing vans, medium cargo trucks |
| 3-Axle Vehicles | Any vehicle with 3 axles regardless of type |
Class 3 Vehicles
Class 3 covers large commercial vehicles, typically with 4 or more axles:
| Trailer Trucks | Semi-trailers, container trucks, flatbed trailers |
| Heavy Trucks | 10-wheeler trucks, heavy cargo vehicles |
| 4+ Axle Vehicles | Any vehicle with 4 or more axles |
| Tankers | Fuel tankers, water tankers, chemical transport |
Toll Fee Differences by Class
Class 2 toll fees are typically 1.5 to 2 times higher than Class 1. Class 3 fees are typically 2 to 2.5 times higher than Class 1. For example, on NLEX from Balintawak to Dau: Class 1 pays ₱411, Class 2 pays ₱670, and Class 3 pays ₱955. The exact multiplier varies by expressway and route.
How Vehicle Class is Determined
Your vehicle class is automatically determined when your RFID is installed. The classification is based on the number of axles visible when the vehicle passes through the toll plaza. The RFID system records your vehicle class, and the correct toll fee is deducted automatically. If your vehicle is misclassified, visit any RFID customer service center with your vehicle registration to request reclassification.
