About Our Traffic Data

Traffic conditions on Expressway.PH are sourced from HERE Technologies, a global leader in location data and real-time traffic intelligence. HERE processes data from millions of connected devices, fleet vehicles, and road sensors to deliver accurate, segment-level traffic conditions.

For NLEX, SLEX, and Skyway — the three busiest Philippine expressways — traffic data is auto-refreshed every 10 minutes via background monitoring. This means you see near-real-time conditions without having to click anything. For the remaining 10 expressways, live data is fetched on-demand when you click the Refresh button.

Historical traffic patterns are compiled from months of traffic observations, capturing day-of-week and hour-of-day trends. These patterns help you plan trips even when live data is temporarily unavailable, showing you typical conditions for your intended travel time.

NLEX vs SLEX vs Skyway: Traffic Comparison

The three busiest Philippine expressways — NLEX, SLEX, and Skyway — each have distinct traffic patterns driven by different commuter populations and geographic factors.

NLEX (88.85 km) serves the Manila-to-provinces corridor, connecting Metro Manila to Bulacan, Pampanga, and points north. Its worst bottleneck is the Balintawak-Meycauayan section during the 5-8 PM northbound rush. Friday evenings are particularly heavy as weekend travelers head to provinces.

SLEX (56.45 km) carries dense commuter traffic between Metro Manila and Laguna/Batangas. The Magallanes-Alabang section is consistently the most congested, with 30-45 minute delays during peak hours. Weekend traffic to Tagaytay adds additional southbound volume.

Skyway Stage 3 (18.83 km) is the game-changer — an elevated expressway that traverses Metro Manila from Buendia to Balintawak in 20-35 minutes, compared to 1.5-3 hours on EDSA. Even during peak hours, Skyway Stage 3 flows significantly better than surface alternatives, making it the recommended route for north-south Metro Manila travel.

For the lightest traffic, consider TPLEX, SCTEX, and CALAX, which consistently have light weekday volumes. These expressways become moderate only during weekends and holiday periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Expressway.PH get traffic condition information?
Traffic conditions are sourced from HERE Technologies real-time traffic API, covering all 13 Philippine expressways. NLEX, SLEX, and Skyway data is auto-refreshed every 10 minutes via background monitoring. Other expressways show live data on-demand when you click Refresh. Historical patterns are compiled from months of traffic observations.
What are the peak traffic hours on Philippine expressways?
Peak hours vary by expressway: NLEX northbound is heaviest 5-8 PM on weekdays and Friday evenings. SLEX southbound is busiest 5-8 PM on weekdays. Skyway Stage 3 sees heavy traffic 7-9 AM and 5-8 PM. During holidays (Holy Week, Christmas, long weekends), expect heavy traffic starting Thursday evening through Friday morning on all northbound and southbound expressways.
How can I avoid heavy expressway traffic?
To avoid heavy traffic: depart before 5 AM or after 9 PM for long-distance trips. Use Skyway Stage 3 to bypass EDSA during rush hours. Use the Route Planner above to see current conditions before departing. On holidays, consider traveling on the actual holiday (less traffic than the day before). NLEX-SCTEX traffic is lighter on weekday mornings compared to weekends.
How does the Route Planner work?
Select your origin and destination toll plazas, and the Route Planner calculates your route across multiple expressways. It overlays live traffic data on your route to estimate actual travel time (not just distance-based), shows total toll fees with RFID system breakdown, and estimates fuel cost. The color-coded timeline strip shows traffic conditions along your entire route at a glance.
What do the map colors mean?
Green = Clear/Light (flowing at or near speed limit). Yellow = Moderate (some slowdown, 50-75 km/h). Orange = Heavy (significant delays, 20-50 km/h). Red = Standstill (near-stopped traffic, under 20 km/h). Gray = Closed or no data. The map updates automatically as new traffic data arrives.
Which expressway has the least traffic?
TPLEX, SCTEX, and CALAX generally have the lightest traffic among Philippine expressways. TPLEX (Tarlac to La Union) sees moderate traffic only during holidays. SCTEX (Subic to Tarlac) has consistent light traffic on weekdays. CALAX (Laguna to Cavite) is still relatively new and carries lighter volume. NLEX and Skyway are the busiest expressways due to Metro Manila commuter traffic.
