About CALAX

The Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX) has revolutionized access to Tagaytay and the Cavite highlands since opening in phases between 2020 and 2022. This 44.6-kilometer expressway creates a vital link between the SLEX corridor at Mamplasan and the tourist destinations of Tagaytay, cutting through the agricultural heartland between Laguna and Cavite provinces. Before CALAX, motorists faced the notorious Aguinaldo Highway with its narrow two-lane configuration, steep grades, and chronic congestion, making the Manila-Tagaytay trip a 3-4 hour ordeal during peak periods. CALAX reduces this to 90 minutes in good conditions. The expressway serves dual economic purposes: facilitating cargo movement to and from Laguna's industrial estates and serving weekend tourist traffic to Tagaytay's cool climate, restaurants, and panoramic views of Taal Lake. CALAX features four lanes with modern safety standards including emergency bays, LED lighting, and regular patrols. The expressway traverses relatively flat terrain until the Silang section, where gentle grades begin the ascent toward Tagaytay's volcanic ridge. Key exits include Technopark (serving Laguna's industrial areas), Sta. Rosa/Tagaytay (the primary exit for Tagaytay's main commercial strip), and Silang (serving southern Tagaytay and Cavite towns). CALAX has spurred significant real estate development, with new residential subdivisions and commercial centers emerging near major exits. The expressway connects to SLEX at the Mamplasan interchange, creating a seamless expressway route from Metro Manila. During dry season weekends (November-April), CALAX experiences heavy traffic as Manila residents escape to Tagaytay's cooler climate, though it remains far more efficient than the old highway route.
