What To Do in an Expressway Emergency

Car Breakdown on an Expressway

  1. 1

    Move to the shoulder

Safely steer your vehicle to the emergency shoulder or the nearest emergency bay. Do not stop in a travel lane.

  2. 2

    Turn on hazard lights

Activate your hazard lights immediately so other motorists can see you. If available at night, turn on your cabin lights.

  3. 3

    Place early warning device

Set up your triangular reflector at least 4 meters behind your vehicle. This is a legal requirement under RA 4136.

  4. 4

    Stay inside your vehicle

Remain inside your car with seatbelts fastened. Do not walk along the expressway or attempt to cross lanes.

  5. 5

    Call for help

Call the expressway hotline or 911. Provide your location (check kilometer posts or the last exit you passed).

  6. 6

    Wait for patrol assistance

Expressway patrol units operate 24/7 and can provide basic roadside assistance, towing to the nearest exit, or coordinate further help.

Accident on an Expressway

  1. 1

    Check for injuries

Assess yourself and all passengers for injuries. Do not move injured persons unless there is immediate danger (fire, oncoming traffic).

  2. 2

    Call 911

Call 911 immediately if there are injuries. Provide the expressway name, direction of travel, and nearest kilometer marker or exit.

  3. 3

    Move vehicles if possible

If the accident is minor and vehicles are drivable, move them to the shoulder to avoid blocking traffic and causing secondary accidents.

  4. 4

    Turn on hazard lights

All involved vehicles should have hazard lights on. Place early warning devices behind the rearmost vehicle.

  5. 5

    Call the expressway hotline

Notify the expressway operator so they can dispatch patrol units, manage traffic, and document the incident.

  6. 6

    Document the scene

Take photos of vehicle positions, damage, plate numbers, and road conditions. Exchange information with other drivers. Do not admit fault.

Flat Tire on an Expressway

  1. 1

    Do not brake suddenly

If you feel a tire blowout, grip the steering wheel firmly and gradually slow down. Do not slam the brakes as this can cause loss of control.

  2. 2

    Pull over safely

Gently steer to the emergency shoulder. Travel as far right as possible to leave space between your vehicle and the travel lanes.

  3. 3

Activate hazard lights and place reflectors

Turn on your hazards immediately. Place your triangular early warning device at least 4 meters behind your vehicle.

  4. 4

Assess if you can change the tire

If you have a spare tire, jack, and wrench, and the shoulder is wide enough to work safely, you may change the tire yourself. Always work on the side away from traffic.

  5. 5

    Call for assistance if needed

If you cannot change the tire safely, call the expressway hotline. Patrol units carry basic tire-change equipment and can assist or coordinate towing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my car breaks down on NLEX?
Pull over to the emergency shoulder immediately and turn on your hazard lights. Stay inside your vehicle if it is safe to do so. Call the NLEX hotline at 1-35000. NLEX patrol units will be dispatched to your location. Do not attempt to cross lanes or walk along the expressway. If you have an early warning device (triangular reflector), place it at least 4 meters behind your vehicle.
What is the emergency hotline for Philippine expressways?
For any expressway emergency, you can always call 911, the national emergency number. For expressway-specific assistance, call the hotline of the expressway you are on: NLEX, SCTEX, NLEX Connector, and Harbor Link use 1-35000; SLEX, Skyway, STAR Tollway, NAIAX, and MCX use 02-5318-8655; TPLEX uses 0917-876-7717. How do I call for towing on SLEX?
Call SMC Tollways at 02-5318-8655 to request towing assistance on SLEX. SLEX Patrol units can also be flagged down if you see them on the road. Towing services will bring your vehicle to the nearest exit or service area. Note that expressway towing is typically free for the first few kilometers within the expressway, but charges may apply for extended towing beyond the toll road.
Is there a patrol service on expressways?
Yes, all 13 Philippine expressways have dedicated patrol units that operate 24/7. These patrol vehicles drive along the expressway continuously, looking for stalled vehicles, accidents, or road hazards. You can also call the expressway hotline to request patrol assistance. Patrol services include basic roadside assistance like battery jump-starts, tire inflation, and minor mechanical help.
What is MMDA hotline number?
The MMDA (Metro Manila Development Authority) hotline is 136. You can also reach MMDA at (02) 882-4151. MMDA handles traffic management, road clearing operations, and emergency response within Metro Manila. For expressway-specific emergencies, it is faster to call the expressway operator's hotline directly, but MMDA can coordinate response for incidents on Metro Manila expressway segments.
What number to call for expressway accidents?
For any accident on a Philippine expressway, call 911 first, especially if there are injuries. Then call the expressway hotline: 1-35000 for NLEX/SCTEX/Harbor Link/NLEX Connector, 02-5318-8655 for SLEX/Skyway/STAR/NAIAX/MCX, 02-8893-6405 for Skyway (Stages 1-3), 02-8580-8100 for CALAX, 02-8887-2287 for CAVITEX, or 0917-876-7717 for TPLEX. Do expressways have free towing?
Most Philippine expressways provide complimentary towing for stalled vehicles within the expressway to the nearest exit or designated holding area. This service is included in your toll fee. However, towing beyond the expressway exit may incur charges. The towing distance and policies vary by operator. SMC Tollways (SLEX, Skyway, STAR, NAIAX, MCX) and MPTC (NLEX, SCTEX, CALAX, CAVITEX) both offer patrol-assisted towing at no additional cost for short distances within their toll roads.
What is the national emergency number in the Philippines?
The national emergency number in the Philippines is 911. Dialing 911 from any phone (landline or mobile) connects you to the nearest emergency response center, which can dispatch police, fire, or medical teams. This number works nationwide including on all expressways. For expressway-specific assistance (towing, patrol, road hazards), it is faster to call the expressway operator's hotline directly, but 911 will always work for life-threatening emergencies.
