About NLEX Connector

The NLEX Connector Road represents a critical logistics link in Metro Manila's expressway network, providing a direct grade-separated connection between NLEX and the Port of Manila via C-3 Road. Opened in 2021 alongside Skyway Stage 3, this 8-kilometer expressway serves dual purposes: facilitating efficient cargo movement from northern Luzon provinces to Manila's port facilities and providing commuters a faster route to Manila's university belt and downtown areas. Before the Connector, trucks from northern expressways had to navigate congested city streets to reach the port, consuming 1-2 hours for just a few kilometers and contributing significantly to Metro Manila's legendary traffic jams. The Connector cut this travel time to 15-20 minutes while removing thousands of cargo trucks from surface streets. The expressway features four lanes with heavy-duty pavement designed for container trucks and connects to both Skyway Stage 3 and C-3 Road, which leads directly to Manila North Harbor's container terminals. Key exits serve España Boulevard (providing access to the University of Santo Tomas area, FEU, and nearby medical centers), Magsaysay Boulevard (Santa Mesa area), and C-3 Road (port area). The expressway's urban setting required complex engineering including elevated sections over existing neighborhoods and coordination with Skyway Stage 3's construction. While less known than other expressways, the NLEX Connector is economically vital as it significantly improves logistics efficiency for the billions of pesos in cargo moving between northern Luzon's agricultural and industrial zones and the Port of Manila. The expressway operates 24/7 to support port operations, uses Easytrip RFID, and features truck-friendly design elements including gentler grades and wider turning radii.
