A CCS2 charger is the main DC fast-charging connector for modern EVs in the Philippines. It takes the Type 2 AC shape and adds two large DC pins below it, so a compatible EV can fast charge at public DC stations. Under the DOE's connector guidelines, CCS2 is the national DC fast-charging standard, and a CCS2 car can also use Type 2 AC chargers for slower home or destination charging.

What is a CCS2 charger?

CCS2 stands for Combined Charging System (Combo 2). The plug takes the Type 2 AC shape and adds two large DC pins below it, so a compatible EV can pull high-power DC straight into the battery. It is not a better Type 2. It is the DC fast version of the same family, and a CCS2 inlet still accepts Type 2 AC charging.

How fast is CCS2 in the Philippines?

Practical ranges here: 50 kW is the common DC-fast baseline, 120–180 kW at high-power public sites, and a small number of emerging hubs advertise faster. AC Mobility lists DC fast charging from 50 kW up to 350 kW at select hubs. But speed depends on your car as much as the station.

Why your car may charge slower than the station rating

Effective speed is the lower of your car's maximum DC rate and the charger's output — a 50 kW car on a 180 kW charger still charges at 50 kW. Speed also drops with a high state of charge (the curve tapers past 80%, which is why fast-charge specs are quoted 10–80%), cold or hot battery temperature, shared power cabinets, and station maintenance.

Can a CCS2 car use Type 2 AC?

Yes. A CCS2 vehicle inlet includes the Type 2 AC section, so it charges fine at Type 2 AC stations — just slower. This is why a CCS2 car has the widest access in the Philippines: every public DC fast charger plus every Type 2 AC point.

Do not plan around adapters. Shell Philippines states that Shell Recharge does not allow adapters and that only CCS2 and Type 2 vehicles can charge on its network. Treat your car's native connector as the one that matters.

Is 180 kW CCS2 worth it if my car only accepts 70 kW?

Your car caps the speed. On a 180 kW charger a 70 kW car still charges at 70 kW. A higher-power station only helps if your car can accept the rate — though it may charge other cars in the queue faster.

Can I use a CCS2 adapter in the Philippines?

Avoid relying on adapters. Several networks restrict them — Shell Recharge, for example, only allows CCS2 and Type 2 vehicles and does not permit adapters.
