A Type 2 charger is the Philippines' standard AC charging connector for most modern EVs. It is used for home wallboxes, condo and office chargers, malls, hotels, and destination charging. AC charging is slower than CCS2 DC fast charging because the conversion happens inside the car's onboard charger, but it is usually the most practical way to charge during a long parking stop or overnight.
What is a Type 2 charger?
Type 2 (Mennekes, IEC 62196) is a round AC connector with seven pins. It is the Philippines' standard AC plug, used for home wallboxes, condo and office chargers, malls, hotels, and destination parking. Energy authorities note Type 2 AC can deliver up to 22 kW, though many EVs accept only 7–11 kW on AC.
Type 2 vs CCS2
Type 2 is AC; CCS2 is DC fast. A CCS2 inlet usually accepts Type 2 AC, but a Type 2-only inlet cannot accept CCS2 DC. In short: Type 2 is for slower home and destination charging, CCS2 is for fast public charging.
Home charging in the Philippines
A home Type 2 wallbox needs a dedicated circuit, the right breaker and protection, weatherproofing if outdoors, and professional installation — no extension cords. Match the charger output to your car's onboard AC limit, and check your condo or building rules first. Meralco's EV Charging 101 puts a Level 2 home setup at roughly ₱50,000 or more installed.
How long does Type 2 charging take?
Rough guide, depending on your car's onboard charger: a 40 kWh battery is about 6–7 hours at 7 kW or near 2 hours at 22 kW if the car accepts it; a 60 kWh battery is about 9 hours at 7 kW; an 80 kWh battery about 12 hours at 7 kW. Charging tapers near full and real times vary.
Where a public Type 2 station is socket-only, bring your own Type 2 cable rather than an adapter. Match the charger's output to your car's onboard AC limit.

Is Type 2 AC or DC?
Type 2 is an AC connector. The car's onboard charger converts the AC to DC for the battery, which is why it is slower than DC fast charging.
Is Type 2 the same as CCS2?
No. CCS2 is the DC fast version that adds DC pins to the Type 2 shape. Type 2 on its own is AC only.
Can a CCS2 car use Type 2?
Yes. A CCS2 inlet includes the Type 2 AC section, so CCS2 cars charge fine on Type 2 AC stations.
How fast is a Type 2 charger?
Usually 7 kW to 22 kW, but limited by your car's onboard AC charger — many EVs cap at 7–11 kW on AC regardless of the station.
Do I need my own Type 2 cable in the Philippines?
Sometimes. Some public AC stations are tethered (cable attached) and some are socket-only, where you need your own Type 2 cable. Check the station listing before you go.
Is Type 2 cheaper than DC fast charging?
Usually yes per kWh, and home AC charging is typically the cheapest of all. DC fast charging trades cost for speed.
